HARTFORD- State Representative Janice R. Giegler, who represents Danbury and New Fairfield, along with House Republican Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., will host a budget roundtable discussion for local elected leaders from around Connecticut on Tuesday Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. in Room 1-D of the Legislative Office Building.
Republicans and Democrats will receive a budget briefing from non-partisan staff during the session and an outline of Connecticut’s fiscal problems and how they could affect towns and cities.
Rep. Giegler said, “There needs to be a partnership between our local and state governments. Ultimately, anything we do in Hartford will affect towns like New Fairfield and Danbury. I look forward to hearing from my top municipal officials Mark Boughton, mayor of Danbury and John Hodge 1st Selectman of New Fairfield regarding their concerns on the current economic crisis.”
New Fairfield 1st Selectman John Hodge said, “I welcome the opportunity to let our State Representatives know, first-hand, just how potentially devastating the State’s budget woes will be on the local level. I believe that the State can assist towns immediately by relieving us of some of their mandates which have had an enormous impact on our budgets.”
“Mandatory arbitration for municipal employees and prevailing wages are laudable goals in strong economic times, but they limit the number of employees that can be hired and we lose our ability to have meaningful dialogue across the bargaining table,” added Hodge.
