Rep. O’Neill answers a question at a state capitol news conference on Tax Day, May 11th, that he hosted on behalf of two taxpayer organizations that stressed the need to reform Connecticut’s binding arbitration law. The law enables unelected arbitrators who have no concern for local property taxpayers, to impose unaffordable contract settlements with municipal employee unions on towns and cities. Susan Kniep, president of the Federation of Connecticut Taxpayer Organizations, noted that 85 percent or more of local property taxes are dedicated to supporting municipal government employee union salaries and benefits, which in turn are driven by arbitrated contract settlements. Michael Guarco of the Connecticut Municipal Consortium for Fiscal Responsibility also participated in the news conference.
