STAFFORD — Our greatest generation got a deserving nod today during a wonderful ceremony at the senior center, where a packed house watched World War II veterans receive special public service awards from Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz. Even better, some of these special veterans took to the microphone in sharing their experiences serving our country. Rep. Penny Bacchiochi, who represents Stafford in the General Assembly, told the veterans that their tremendous record of service is something all Americans can agree upon. And Sen. Tony Guglielmo delved into the history of WWII before ending his remarks by telling the recipients that their actions triggered a wave of freedom gave people throughout the world courage to pursue their dreams. Kim Burgess provided a great rendition of the National Anthem, and John Hinchliffe Jr. of the local VFW post gave the invocation. One veteran talked briefly about his experience as a prisoner of war, and another gentleman discussed the important wartime role played by the Merchant Marines.
