Carpino Meets Middletown Constituents


MIDDLETOWN — Christie Carpino held office hours here tonight at Stonycrest Towers, where residents talked to their state representative about issues such as medicare and social security as well as a nearby bus stop that’s in need of an awning. Carpino, elected in November, has held similar sessions in the other communities she represents: Cromwell and Portland. Middletown Mayor Sebastian Giuliano stopped by Carpino’s outreach session, talking to folks about topics such snow removal in the city.

WOODBRIDGE— State Representative Themis Klarides (R-114) will hold office hours at the Woodbridge Town Hall in the Selectman’s Board Room, along with State Senator Joe Crisco (D-17) and First Selectman Edward Maum Sheehy on Monday, February 7th from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Constituents are welcome to stop by to talk about any issues or questions related to state and local government.

“A new legislative session began this month on January 5th and I am looking forward to meeting one-on-one with my constituents to hear their questions and concerns right from the start. My fellow lawmaker, State Senator Joe Crisco who also represents Woodbridge, and the Woodbridge First Selectman Edward Maum Sheehy, have graciously agreed to join me. The State of Connecticut is facing an estimated $3 billion budget deficit this year and, as members of the legislature, we have to make some tough decisions to get the state’s financial house in order. We welcome anyone to stop by and are happy to hear concerns and answer any questions relating to state and local government,” said Rep. Klarides.

Sawyer Supports “Common Sense” Legislative Agenda

State Representative Pam Sawyer of Andover, Bolton, Hebron and Marlborough joined House and Senate Republicans in a joint news conference, January 25th at the capitol, to reveal a joint “Common Sense” legislative agenda proposed by the two caucuses.

The agenda focuses on cuts and consolidations and was based on the “Common Sense Commitment to Connecticut” platform state many candidates campaigned on this fall. The plan features seven principles including, ‘Spend No More Than You Make,” “Borrow Only What You can Afford To Pay Back,” and “Empower Local Governments to Make Local Decisions.” The proposal calls for massive state government reorganization and downsizing, freezing state employee salaries and other across-the-board spending cuts to save Connecticut taxpayers billions over the next two years. Proposals included rolling back spending to previous levels to save as much as $1.6 billion, a 5 percent reduction in the state’s workforce for $250 million in cuts, and cutting state employee givebacks of nearly $1.75 billion for a total savings of over $3 billion in the budgetary biennium.

Carter Appointed to State’s Special Education Council

HARTFORD — Rep. Dan Carter was appointed to the state’s Advisory Council for Special Education today by House Republican Leader Larry Cafero.
Carter’s term on the council will last two years, concluding in June 2011. Proposal Rolls Back Spending, Freezes State Workers’ Pay, Shrinks Government

HARTFORD – Deputy Republican Leader Vincent Candelora of East Haven, North Branford and Wallingford, stood with fellow Republicans today, January 25th to reveal the priorities of the Republican legislative agenda. The outline includes massive state government reorganization and downsizing, freezing state employee salaries and other across-the-board spending cuts to save Connecticut taxpayers billions over the next two years. The state faces a projected $7 billion deficit for the next two years.

“Our last budget and deficit mitigation plans plucked off all of the low hanging fruit and squeezed the very last drop out of that fruit. One-time fixes have been exhausted, too. Now we must saddle up and lead, making the hard governing decisions we were elected to do and steward the state responsibly. Rep. Arthur O’Neill hearing from residents about “Hidden” Energy Tax

SOUTHBURY — Seniors concerned about what many called hidden taxes on their electric bills turned out in force this morning for a forum attended by state Rep. Arthur O’Neill and state Sen. Rob Kane. The two lawmakers fielded questions and suggestions from residents from Heritage Village, an expansive senior housing complex where homes are heated exclusively through electricity.
