HARTFORD – Today State Representative Tim Ackert (R- Coventry) joined his Republican colleagues and outlined a legislative agenda. This agenda includes state government reorganization, downsizing and other across-the-board spending cuts to save Connecticut taxpayers billions over the next two years.

HARTFORD – Deputy Republican Leader Themis Klarides of Woodbridge, Orange and Derby stood with fellow Republicans today, January 25th to reveal the priorities of the Republican legislative agenda. The outline includes massive state government reorganization and downsizing, freezing state employee salaries and other across-the-board spending cuts to save Connecticut taxpayers billions over the next two years. The state faces a projected $7 billion deficit for the next two years.

“We, the Republican caucus, have a plan. Year after year the majority party decided to push hard decisions down the road, and we now face a daunting $7 billion deficit for the next two years. The legislature must start today to cut spending and find ways to create government efficiencies. Our plan does just that, but we must start today. Hovey: Republican ‘Common Sense’ Proposal Rolls Back Spending, Freezes State Workers’ Pay, Shrinks Government

Representative DebraLee Hovey (R-112) joined with House and Senate Republican leaders today in unveiling their legislative agenda for 2011.  The measures include massive state government reorganization and downsizing, freezing state employee salaries, and other across-the-board spending cuts to save Connecticut taxpayers billions over the next two years.

Republicans also offered other suggestions on how to deal with the state’s fiscal crisis: rolling back spending to previous levels to save as much as $1.6 billion; a 5 percent reduction in the state’s workforce for approximately $200 million in cuts; and state employee givebacks worth nearly $1.75 billion. Republicans said their proposal is a true “hold harmless” for municipalities. It will preserve municipal aid over the next two years while saving the state approximately $1 billion.

No significant spending cuts have been made over the last two budget cycles, despite the massive drop off in revenue, which has led to the projected $3.5 billion deficit. Read More→

Kupchick, McKinney and Hwang Sign On to ‘Common Sense Commitment’ to Reform Government and Create Jobs

Making good on their 2010 campaign promises, Fairfield Republicans Sen. John McKinney, Rep. Tony Hwang and Rep. Brenda Kupchick joined other Republican leaders from across the state on Tuesday to sign-on to the Common Sense Commitment to Connecticut – a series of proposed bills and spending reductions designed to reform and right-size state government while growing jobs and the economy. 

“We are making a Common Sense Commitment to Connecticut taxpayers.  Excessive government spending and inefficiency has exacerbated our budget problems.  We need to reduce the size and scope of state government and we will work with Governor Malloy on these reforms,” said Senator McKinney, the Minority Leader of the State Senate.  “Make no mistake:  These reforms and spending cuts are necessary.  Democratic governors in neighboring New York and Massachusetts are making them, and Connecticut needs to follow suit.”

“The can has been kicked down the road long enough,” said Rep. Rowe.  “I am hopeful that this new legislature has learned from past mistakes in failing to address our budget crisis and mounting deficit.  These proposals should be the beginning of our seriously addressing the critical state we are in.”

“We need to make cautious, informed choices when it comes to selecting the things we are going to save and the things we are going to cut in our budget,” said Rep.
