Rigby: Give Connecticut Gun Owners Same Renewal Option as Out-of-State Permit Holders

HARTFORD — Rep. John Rigby proposes giving gun owners who live in this state the option of renewing their permits by mail, something out-of-state holders of Connecticut permits are allowed to do. The legislature’s Public Safety and Security Committee will hold a hearing next week on H.B. 5263, an Act Authorizing Renewal of State Permit to Carry a Pistol or Revolver by Mail.

Rigby, who represents seven Northwest Corner communities, said that renewing a permit by mail would be more convenient for many Connecticut residents—particularly those whose employment schedules prevent them from taking time off to visit state police barracks. Those renewal sessions through the state police are limited, and they often see permit holders waiting for long periods of time, too.

State regulations require permit holders to file renewal paperwork every five years. Rigby said allowing residents to renew by mail would give them the same option already available to Connecticut permit-holders who live outside of this state.

The Feb. 10 hearing will take place inside Room 2A of the Legislative Office Building.
