Today State Representative Tim Ackert (R- Coventry) visited the Beckish Senior Center in Columbia to meet with local residents and discuss issues affecting them, listen to their concerns and answer their questions.
Approximately 25 seniors attended the meet and greet to speak with Ackert, who spent more than an hour discussing Governor Malloy’s budget proposal. The attendees expressed their concern over the abundance of tax increases included in the budget and the lack of significant cuts in spending.
“There was a lot of frustration expressed today, frustration I share with these people,” said Ackert, a small business owner. “The tax increases in the Governor’s budget represents a significant increase in the cost of living; but, many of the people here today are on fixed incomes and simply cannot afford to pay more for things like clothing, gas and food.”
Ackert told the crowd that he will not support the Governor’s budget and will not even consider raising a single tax until he is comfortable that there are an acceptable amount of cuts in state government.
