Davis Meets with Local Business Owners

On Wednesday, September 28th, Representative Christopher Davis (R-Ellington) met with local business owners at a forum hosted by Ellington-based Kelly-Fradet Lumber and the Home Builders Association of Connecticut.

Local contractors, developers, Realtors, and home remodelers presented questions to Representative Davis and other local legislators on a wide-range of topics important to the home building industry, an industry especially hit by the recent economic downturn in Connecticut. The small business owners asked for regulatory and financing reform, tax relief, and tighter spending controls by the state in order to help jumpstart their industry and create jobs here in the state. Also discussed was the state’s endless bonding for unnecessary projects like the New Britain to Hartford busway, the need to retain young professionals, and the desire by the business owners for the state to create a stable, secure business climate.

“We will not have more employees in Connecticut unless we continue to create, grow, and support employers here in the state,” said Representative Davis.”I believe it is very important for legislators to listen to, and take back to Hartford, the ideas and desires of our local small business owners.”

The forum was yet another stop on Representative Davis’ local business tour throughout the community during the past summer and fall in preparation of the upcoming special session regarding job creation in the state.

Hoydick: Legislature Restores Low-Income Heating Funds

State Representative Laura Hoydick (R-120), Ranking Member of the legislature’s Energy Committee, expressed relief this week that the committee had chosen to restore funding to the state’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Plan (LIHEAP) in joint action with the Energy and Human Services Committees.

The restoration was unanimous and bi-partisan, as the legislative panels changed Governor Malloy’s recommendations on the distribution of a federal block grant for the program.

“The original plan from Governor Malloy was to assist only those who used he home heating oil or propane to heat their homes,” said Rep. Hoydick.  “If you do that you turn away the roughly 80,000 families that were eligible last year just because of the source of the heating fuel they use.  Luckily, the legislature unanimously supported this change which will allow people to apply without regard to the source they use to heat their homes over the winter.” Read More→

Perillo:Legislature Restores Low-Income Heating Funds

State Representative Jason Perillo (R-113), a member of the legislature’s budget-writing Appropriations Committee, expressed relief this week that the committee had chosen to restore funding to the state’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Plan (LIHEAP) in joint action with the Energy and Human Services Committees.

The restoration was unanimous and bi-partisan, as the legislative panels changed Governor Malloy’s recommendations on the distribution of a federal block grant for the program.

“Governor Malloy proposed providing heating assistance only to those eligible state residents who use home heating oil or propane to heat their homes,” said Rep. Perillo.  “Unfortunately, that excludes roughly 80,000 families that were able to receive the assistance when we provided it last winter just because they use natural gas, electricity or some other means of heat generation.  We felt it was far too risky to leave so many families literally out in the cold this winter.  Thankfully, support for this was unified, across party-lines and unanimous.” Read More→

Miller: Legislature Restores Low-Income Heating Funds

State Representative Larry Miller (R-122), a member of the legislature’s Energy Committee, expressed relief this week that the committee had chosen to restore funding to the state’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Plan (LIHEAP) in joint action with the Energy and Human Services Committees.

The restoration was unanimous and bi-partisan, as the legislative panels changed Governor Malloy’s recommendations on the distribution of a federal block grant for the program.

Governor Malloy proposed providing heating assistance only to those eligible state residents who use home heating oil or propane to heat their homes which would exclude roughly 80,000 families that were able to receive the assistance last winter.

“This was the right thing to do,” said Rep. Miller.  “You can’t tell two families who have the same struggles that you’re only helping one of them because the other uses electric heat.  I would urge families who may need assistance this year to apply early to be certain they get assistance.” Read More→
