Rep. Noujaim Congratulates ShopRite of Waterbury for Helping to Raise $1 Million to Feed the Hungry

Rep. Noujaim congratulated his friend Paul Tornaquindici and the employees of his ShopRite of Waterbury store for their outstanding work to raise money and awareness of the hunger across the city of Waterbury, the state of Connecticut and nationally during the Shop Rite Partners In Caring Cheerios Box unveiling ceremony at the Waterbury store Monday, March 19, 2012.

During National Hunger Awareness Month this past September ShopRite’s 240 stores, including the Waterbury location, raised more than $1 million to support food banks in their local communities. These contributions came directly from shoppers and the money all goes to needy people living in the communities the stores are in.

“I’m proud of the work the people of ShopRite have done on behalf of those who are struggling with hunger,” Rep. Noujaim said. “ShopRite’s commitment and dedication to making our community, and our country, better is exemplified by the employees who collected more than $1 million to go directly to families that are hurting the most and the shoppers who gave so generously.”

Store employees Genesis Vega, a cashier, and Steve Kiebus, a meat cutter, were selected by their coworkers to appear on a special edition box of Cheerios honoring the commitment of ShopRite stores in the fight against hunger. Of the 240 ShopRite stores nationally, 45 were selected to have two of their employees represent them by having their photo appear on specially designed boxes of Cheerios.
