Rep. Cafero, Sen. Duff & Norwalk Delegation Welcome State Investment in Literacy Lab

Stepping Stones Museum for Children to get funding to establish early education/ literacy laboratory

NORWALK – House Republican Leader Larry Cafero (R-Norwalk), State Sen. Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) and members of the Norwalk delegation welcomed news today that Stepping Stones Museum for Children will get help from the state in establishing an early learning and literacy laboratory.

The Early Learning and Literacy Initiative project – a collaboration between Stepping Stone, Literacy How Inc., Norwalk Community College and the Norwalk Housing Authority – is slated to receive funding from the state when the Bond Commission meets on Monday. The $250,000 will fund renovations to the Stepping Stones facility to establish the literacy lab. The overall project seeks to provide young children with a solid foundation for school, to inspire a lifelong love of learning and to ensure future academic and life success.

“Stepping Stones has played an incredibly important role for Norwalk families through its ‘hands-on’ educational approach that enriches young lives. This state award will strengthen the relationships between Stepping Stones and the other key players in Norwalk from the community college level on down through local government,’’ said Rep. Cafero. “The Literacy Lab will benefit greatly from this infusion of state money and is a recognition that Stepping Stones enhances early childhood education.’’

“One of the most powerful things we can do for our children is to give them a solid foundation in literacy,” Sen. Duff said. “There is no more capable organization to carry out this mission than Stepping Stones Museum backed by a cadre of able community organizations and learning institutions. This investment by the state will enrich literacy opportunities for scores of children”.

“Providing the necessary resources and supporting efforts that nurture and advance early learning and literacy programs is a smart investment,” said Rep. Chris Perone (D-Norwalk). “Stepping Stones Museum is an important resource and this funding will enhance their ability to provide children with a more solid foundation for future success.”

“In education there is nothing as important as early literacy, and I am so glad that the state will be funding the beneficial work done by Stepping Stones to give children this opportunity to learn in their early, most formative years,” said Rep. Gail Lavielle (R-Wilton). “The successes of this Norwalk museum not only help the local community, but have an important impact on the lives of children throughout our region.”

“Considering the recent passage of the state’s landmark education reform bill and the emphasis on early childhood education and literacy, it’s fantastic that Governor Malloy has agreed to give money to Norwalk’s Stepping Stones Museum so it can become a leader in early learning and literacy initiatives,” said Rep. Bruce Morris (D-Norwalk).

“Stepping Stones provides an opportunity to learn valuable lessons about culture, all taught through the senses of sight, sound and touch, enabling children to enjoy learning, which is so important at their young age,” said Rep. Terrie Wood (R-Darien).

Rep. Srinivasan honors Memorial Day in Glastonbury

Rep. Srinivasan was proud to walk in the Glastonbury Memorial Day Parade and take part in the Sgt. Steven J. DeLuzio Wooden Bat Game on May 26. Rep. Srinivasan walked the parade route alongside town municipal leaders and elected officials. The parade was led by Parade Marshal Marine Corporal Manny Jimenez and two Glastonbury Gold Star Mothers, Anita Coullard Dziedzic whose son Sgt. David Coullard died in Iraq on August 1, 2005, and Diane Deluzio whose son died in Afghanistan on August 22, 2010.

The Glastonbury high school band, as well as a number of fife and drum corps and pipe bands entertained the spectators along the route. The Connecticut National Guard, various emergency personnel groups, Girl and Boy Scouts and other town organizations were all well represented. The parade ended at the Town Green where the Gold Star Mothers and their husbands, along with Rep. Srinivasan and other town leaders, listened to speeches about the meaning of Memorial Day. The occasion also featured music and songs from the Glastonbury High School band and choir.
Parade martial Marine Corporal Manny Jimenez was introduced by Vicki Thomas, Director of Communications for Purple Heart Homes. Corporal Jimenez was severely wounded in Afghanistan, but with the help of the local community he will soon receive a handicap-accessible home in Glastonbury.

Rep. Srinivasan gave the following Memorial Day message as part of the ceremony:
“Today is the time for us to pause and reflect on the price that has been paid to preserve our freedom, something we can never take for granted. The memorial poppy is the symbol of the price of war and the sacrifice of millions of Americans who have served our nation, and the many who made the ultimate sacrifice. In a formal way we recognize and salute the sacrifices made on our behalf. In our hearts on a daily basis we will be eternally thankful.”
He continued, “Freedom comes with a price. That ultimate price has been paid by so many families across the nation. Today, we stand together to remember the lives lost and to thank them so that we can continue to breathe the fresh air of freedom. For our today and our tomorrow they gave their lives. Lest we forget, we gather to remind ourselves that freedom can never be taken for granted and the freedom that we enjoy today comes with a price.”
Representative Srinivasan had the opportunity to discuss upcoming fundraisers with the Gold Star Mothers, and all the other good work that they do. More information about their upcoming Sgt. David Coullard Golf Outing taking place on July 20 cane be found at www.sgtdavidcoullard.com, and more information on the Sgt. Steven J.
