State Representative Marilyn Giuliano is serving her sixth term representing the shoreline communities of Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook. She currently serves in the position of Assistant Republican leader for her party’s caucus.
Marilyn is presently the minority party leader on the legislature’s Education Committee. She also serves as a member of the Appropriations Committee, and on the Program Review and Investigations committee. Marilyn was recently appointed to serve on the Closing the Achievement Gap Task Force. She previously served as a member of the Probate Redistricting Commission, and on the Governor’s Education Cost Sharing Reform Committee.
Marilyn has sponsored legislation targeting environmental stewardship, home ownership, expanded healthcare opportunities for the elderly, and has secured needed funding for important initiatives in the towns she represents.
Growing up in Wallingford in an extended family with a strong community service ethic, Marilyn learned early on the value and rewards of service to others. Prior to her election to the Connecticut General Assembly, Marilyn served as the vice-chair of the Old Saybrook Board of Finance, was a member of the Old Saybrook Public Health Nursing Board, served on the HOPE (Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere) Partnership Advisory Board, and was selected as the Old Saybrook town representative to the Regional Mental Health Board. Marilyn has worked as a PTO parent volunteer, Girl Scout leader, catechism teacher, and as a Eucharistic Minister in her church.
In recognition of her legislative leadership, Marilyn was awarded the St. Edmund’s Medal of Honor in 2008 for service to others and for her dedication to making her community a better place. In 2008, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1467 of Lyme-Old Lyme honored Marilyn with the VFW Meritorious and Distinguished Service Award. Marilyn was named 2010 Children’s Champion by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance for her work on early childhood education issues. In November, 2010, Marilyn was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Women in Leadership Award by the Boy Scouts of America Connecticut Yankee Council for her leadership on education issues, and for fiscal responsibility in state government.
Apart from her statehouse duties, Marilyn is a career school psychologist attending to the needs of children and families in the Lyme-Old Lyme Public Schools. Married to Joe Giuliano for 34 years, the Giulianos live in Old Saybrook and have two adult daughters.
