The Sikorsky VH-3D (Sea King) is the primary presidential helicopter. The VH-3D designation is specific to US Marine Corps VIP transport helicopters.

All the presidential rotary aircraft are flown by pilots of Marine Helicopter Squadron One, or HMX-1. HMX-1 was established in 1947 as an experimental unit to develop techniques and tactics for the use of helicopters in amphibious operations. Ten years later, it became the helicopter squadron for the transportation of the president both overseas and within the continental United States. It also provides transportation for the vice president, members of the Cabinet, and foreign dignitaries as directed by the White House Military Office.

Marine One is the call sign used when the president is on board one of the HMX-1 Marine helicopters. A Marine Corps craft carrying the vice president is designated Marine Two.

When the president is due to travel by Marine One, three helicopters will stand ready. After the president is aboard one, the three will take off simultaneously and perform a complex set of manoeuvres designed to make it impossible to tell which craft is carrying the president. The three will then travel together until the president is safely on the ground again.
Marine One currently denotes one of 19 helicopters, either the large VH-3D (seen here) or the newer, smaller VH-60N Whitehawk. They are due to be replaced by the AgustaWestland EH101, produced by Lockheed Martin under licence as the US101, with the military designation VH-71 Kestrel. Initial operational capability is due by 2008 and full operational capability by no later than 2014.
